[TSS Interview] Bricks Gets It Right With His House Tune “Get Right”

[TSS Interview] Bricks Gets It Right With His House Tune “Get Right”
Alejandro Vega

LA producer Bricks makes groovy bass-heavy House tunes. His latest is called Get Right and will blow your speakers up if you’re not careful with the volume. I got the chance to do a small interview about how he got his name, his inspirations, goals and how he got into electronic music.

TSS: How did your construction job influence you starting the alias?

B: When coming up with my brand, I wanted to keep it authentic. I wanted something that described me as a person and as a producer. So to accomplish that, my lady and I sat down and wrote down words that described me, or words that had to do with construction. She had written down the word Bricks, and it just clicked. Even though I’m a commercial plumber, not a brick layer, something about the word resonated with me. Bricks is blue-collar, hard working, resilient, strong, determined and of course red, lol.

TSS: Who are your main influences that inspired Bricks?

B: A few tracks that have influenced my break style were Afrika Bambaataa – Planet Rock, Afro-Rican – Give it All You Get, Freestyle – Don’t Stop the Rock, Newcleus – Jam on it, Al-Naafyish – Time, Cybotron – Clear, Herbie Hancock – Rock It and Egyptian Lover – Egypt Egypt. Those are just a few of my favorites and to this day are still great songs. When it comes to that 80’s sound that I love so much, that came straight from watching Tron, the original. Daft Punk did an amazing job with Tron: Legacy, but he OG is still where it’s at for me.

TSS: How will 2017 be different than 2016 for you?

B:2016 was a great year for me cause I was able to finally come out with the Bricks brand. A lot of great opportunities came my way, like signing with Indie Pop management and AM Only. This year, I plan on growing this brand out to the masses. I feel good about this year already. After releasing ‘Get Right’ last week, I am going to release a remix I did for a big artist and another original track a couple weeks after that. I’m working on putting out more music and I hope everyone keeps showing the love.

TSS: What got you into electronic music?

B: I got into the rave scene early with my boy Matt when we were around 17 years old. We’d drive to some sketchy parts of Southern California just to listen to some Hard House. That was fun to just go crazy and have fun, but what really got me hooked was when I heard a track called Launch by DJ Jean for the first time. From that point on, I was hooked. My taste in Electronic Music has grown since then to include a lot of different sub-genres in the EDM world. I listen to everything from House to Drum n Bass and I truly appreciate every genre.

Insomniac Does Memorial Day Weekend Right With Audio On The Bay

Insomniac Does Memorial Day Weekend Right With Audio On The Bay
Jason Flores

This past Memorial Day weekend we spent it in the Bay Area at Insomniac’s annual 2-Day ‘Audio On The Bay’ event in Richmond, California. This was the third year the event took place as Insomniac continues to prove why they are one of the leading promoters in all of California. This year’s lineup for included artists such as Ephwurd, Will Sparks, GTA, Slander, Keys N Krates, Dr. Fresch, and more.

Audio On The Bay

The event infused genres from all over the dance spectrum for this weekend ranging from Melbourne Bounce to Psytrance to Hardstyle to Trap to Dubstep and more all being played by the acts.

We started the first night off with Throttle. The up-and-coming Australian artist has had some major releases recently including a release with Oliver Heldens titled “Waiting” that smashed charts. Managing to keep a nice blend of house and disco beats w/ a touch of hard drops, Throttle managed to get the party going. Following Throttle was Chris Lake but who really took us by surprise and may have had one of the best sets of the night was none other than Melbourne’s finest, Will Sparks.

Will Sparks - Audio On The Bay

The man of the hour dominated his performance and blew us away with his choice of tracks to play. Managing to read the crowd perfectly, he knew when and how to play ever track. A moment that stood out to us was when he dropped Vini Vici’s remix of “Free Tibet”, a Psytrance mega hit which in turn the crowd lost it to. At one point, aware he was in the home of the Warriors in the Bay Area with a venue with dropped cell signals, he notified the crowd that their home team had just beat the Thunder to push their Western Conference Finals to a Game 7.

Following Will was Miami duo GTA and as always, they brought the heavy kicks and 808s. They included tracks such as their rendition of Zelda with “Saria’s Turn Up’, original with Rich The Kid titled “My Mamacita” and more.

To close off the first night was Flux Pavilion who as always puts on a show but no one could expect anything else from Flux who has a heavy armory of hits from his originals and remixes. A continuing favorite moment for us in Flux’s performance has to be when it is time for the “Bass Cannon” although the track is over two years old, it just never can get too old for us.

GTA

Moving into the second day, we arrived just in time for the start of Ghastly’s performance. The second day was dominated by heavy bass music players so we expected nonetheless nothing but heavy drops which we got a taste of quickly with Ghastly. We can never get tired of Ghastly and his performances as it is always something you can look forward to. Although we could tell some of the folks in the crowd were still feeling the effects from the previous night, as soon as the music started, it was right back to the party.

dada
Following Ghastly was Toronto’s very own Keys N Krates who possibly stole the show for us for the second day with their live performance. A highlight for us had to be when they played their live version of their track “Dum Dee Dum” which the entire crowd went nuts to once the first kick came in as the visuals went and strobe lights went off.

We decided to end our night off with Slander who have taken over the the game within the past year and their fan base was very present in the crowd. They brought the heavy trap tunes that we expected to hear including their very popular remixes of Showtek’s “We Like To Party”, Alison Wonderland’s “U Don’t Know’ and more. As the crowd continued screaming for more, the more Slander delivered connecting with the crowd.

Slander

The event as a whole was great and couldn’t have gone better. The music selection was great, the visual production including the laser work was fascinated, and we had a great time at the event. We look forward to next year’s Audio On The Bay. Next up by Insomniac Events is EDC Las Vegas 2016 and for more info on that visit them at https://www.insomniac.com/ .

RÜFÜS DU SOL Announce ‘You Were Right’ Tour with Four North American Stops

RÜFÜS DU SOL Announce ‘You Were Right’ Tour with Four North American Stops
Nina T. Ravers

This is big news guys, RÜFÜS DU SOL is coming to America. The live electronic stars are coming back to North America for an exclusive 4 date exposé of indie-house as part of their ‘You Were Right’ World Tour.

The shows will celebrate the trio’s recent hit releases exhibiting their unique range from emotive ballads to shear dancefloor heat – with the first show being on November 5th at Venue Nightclub in Vancouver. The other American tour stops include shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. I suggest making a trek to one of these four cities even if they’re not nearby. This is not a tour you want to miss out on.

This tour comes on the wake of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s Summer 2015 single ‘You Were Right’ which was written upon the band’s return to Australia after a Winter writing music in Berlin. Peep the music video below if you missed it:
