What’s up gentlemen! Much respect on your latest single.. You guys definitely work well together. We appreciate solid music, especially form true up and coming artists. lowkeylife!!! (JaSeth, Calvin Bauer, John Will & trippyTB) Please tell me how long have you all been making music? Where are you guys from? Do you remember where you were all at exactly when the first group song was written!!??
Well we’ve been an official music group since December of 2014. Which is when John and trip started to take their music seriously. However, JaSeth has been involved in singing for quite sometime. As well as Calvin who has been in multiple bands and plays multiple instruments very well.
Our music group originated in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which is where all of our members grew up.
The first song we wrote wasn’t written or recorded together. Rather it was put together piece by piece at trip’s house, which is where our studio resides.
How did you guys end up with the group name lowkeylife?
Well when we decided to come up with a group name we wanted a name that described all of our members best. So since the personalities of all our members are very relaxed, laid back and “low key” we decided to go with the name lowkeylife because we all literally live low key lives.
Your styles and rhyme schemes is super raw and different! How do you describe you sound as a group? How long did it take for you guys to find your sound?
We like to describe our sound as “music that makes your ears wonder”! As for how long it took us to find this sound we’re unsure. After making music with someone for long enough you just learn how to build off each others ideas and accept each other’s constructive criticism.
Tell us about your Hip Hop and/or music influences? Any local influences? Was there anyone in your life that motivated your to STEP IT UP when it comes to making dope Hip Hop?
Some of our influences include OutKast, J. Cole, Lana Del Rey and Eminem. When it comes to local influences, J. Cole and 9th Wonder grew up only thirty minutes to an hour away from where we live. As for who motivated us to step up our game we’d have to say it was each other. We’ve all got a dream of making something of ourselves through music so the energy in the room is always filled with motivation wherever we go.
Please breakdown the creative process of your latest single “Slowly Screaming”.
Originally our member JaSeth came to the studio one day with an instrumental to use as one of his new singles. However, after trip heard the instrumental he had an idea to turn it into a lowkey song that everyone in the group’s vocals could be on. This was one of the rare instances where a Youtube beat was actually able to accompany all of our diverse sounds, so it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Anyway, after trip finally wrote the lyrics, except for John’s verse at the end, we started to record our vocals piece by piece. Rarely are all four of us in the studio at the same time so usually each member records there vocals individually, so with “Slowly Screaming” it was business as usual. Finally after all the vocals got recorded and trip mixed the track we came together to listen and revise. After making a few adjustments to mixing we mastered the record and released the final product along with a promotional video.
What are you guys looking forward to for 2017? Anything you going to be doing differently compared to past years?
We’re looking forward to what we’re always looking forward to, making good music. I’d say only thing we’re going to be doing differently is trying to have a visual representation of our music such as promotional videos. As well as trying to market our music more effectively and invest more money so we can broaden our audience.
Any pressuring situations before you decided to push the single? Did everything work out according to plan?
Well originally the song had been finished months before we released it. But we wanted to take the time and get a promotional video together and have enough money to effectively market our music. The promotional video was struggling to make because it’s very hard to get all 4 of our members together in the same place. After we finally got the video together and released the song it still didn’t get as much exposure as we were planning for. However, we’re still satisfied with the record and proud of ourselves for making something so dope.
Any new projects coming out!?
Be on the lookout for some solo projects and singles from our members before another official lowkeylife track is released.
Rappers nowadays think by throwing up a few videos up on social media and pushing quick projects, they can blow up overnight! Give us your view on how over saturated the market is right now with so many MC’s/Producers but not to many quality music.
It’s not that the market is saturated with low quality music, because there is a lot of good material out there that doesn’t get the exposure it deserves. Instead, the problem is that the music which is getting the most exposure, is not the best quality music. When music of lower quality is getting exposure it makes critics think that all the music in that genre is low quality and over saturated in the market, when it really isn’t.
How often do you guys perform LIVE? Any shows lined up in the near future?
Even though we’ve performed before we rarely perform live and don’t have any shows lined up in the future. It’s our belief that if we want to get more exposure we must focus on our internet presence and quality of studio recorded music.
Where do you see yourselves in 5yrs time?
Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”?
We believe that underground hip hop music is undiscovered and underrated music. It’s hip hop that isn’t afraid to break the mold of what’s most popular or what people might expect. It’s not afraid to be misunderstood as long as it serves it’s artistic purpose.
